How It Works

Why It Matters
For the first time, pet birds, such as cockatiels, parakeets, and other small parrots, can use an AAC-style communication board to express their needs and preferences. With FeatherTalks, birds can clearly communicate requests such as food, play, scritches, and love, helping to strengthen the bond between bird and human.

Meet Mango
This is Mango, our cockatiel, and the inspiration behind FeatherTalks. She’s curious, smart, and full of personality, always looking for new ways to interact with us. We wanted to give her more than chirps and body language to communicate, so we created the FeatherTalks AAC-style board.
With her board, Mango can tap tiles to say “yes,” ask for scritches, or request food. Every day, she surprises us by showing just how much birds are capable of learning. Mango is proof that small parrots like cockatiels, parakeets, and lovebirds can use communication tools, too, not just larger parrots.
FAQ
What is FeatherTalks Board?
FeatherTalks Board is a AAC-style communication board made for birds like cockatiels, parakeets, and other small parrots. The tiles are extra sensitive and easy for a beak to press, so birds can tap to say “yes,” ask for scritches, let you know they’re hungry, and share other needs in a clear way. It also comes with a companion app for recording custom sounds and managing tiles.
Can birds really use this board?
Yes! Birds really can learn to use FeatherTalks. Here’s Mango using her board:
How is FeatherTalks different from tablet apps?
FeatherTalks is designed for birds, not people. Whether it’s a gentle beak tap or even a curious tongue tap, the tactile buttons are easy for them to explore and learn.
Who is FeatherTalks for?
FeatherTalks is designed for smaller pet birds such as cockatiels, parakeets, and lovebirds, as well as other birds of a similar size. It isn’t intended for larger parrots (like amazons, cockatoos, or macaws), whose powerful beaks could damage the board. As with any bird product, supervision is recommended.
Is it safe for my bird?
Yes, FeatherTalks is designed with companion birds in mind. Every edge is smoothed for comfort, and bird safety will always remain our top priority as we refine production.
How many tiles should I start with?
You can begin with 2–3 highly motivating tiles. Model taps, reinforce success, and add more as your bird shows interest.
Can I record custom sounds?
Yes, you can record your own prompts (e.g., “Eat,” “Scritch,” “Outside”) and assign them to any tile.
Does it grow with my bird?
The current board includes 12 customizable tiles, a solid starting point for most birds. We are exploring ways to expand in the future as birds progress.
